We report an efficient approach to accurately and efficiently compute transmission probabilities in resonant deep tunneling regime. Dynamical systems subjects to this phenomenon prove hard to simulate numerically even with exact methods, which motivates new methodological developments owing to the impact resonant phenomena have in several processes such as chemical reactions and electronic transport. Our approach is based on the original reformulation of stationnary quantum scattering as the propagation of a quantum trajectory in extended phase space. The present paper discusses in detail the node problem occurring to the time-independent quantum trajectory method in this very challenging situation, and introduces an efficient node-skipping scheme to circumvent expensive numerical integration in their vicinity. We illustrate how this numerical extension allows to treat all regimes of quantum tunneling with great versatility by comparison to existing approaches of the litterature. The quantum trajectory thus represents a very promising tool for the study of complex chemical reactions characterized by resonant tunneling effect.

Resonances are ubiquitous in a wide range of physical and chemical phenomena. Their impact on quantum scattering processes renders their study as important as it can be puzzling. In this paper, we illustrate the accuracy of a fully quantum, purely trajectory based reformulation of quantum mechanics proposed by one of the authors (Poirier) to acquire insights on shape resonances through direct and accurate computation of the diagonal elements of Smith’s lifetime matrix. This study also generalizes the relationship between the quantum trajectory propagation time and the Eisenbud- Wigner time delay—introduced in our previous publication[1] for symmetric potentials—to the general case of asymmetric potential profiles. In addition, we show how the complex amplitudes of the scattering matrix can be extracted from left- and right-incident quantum trajectories. Finally, we demonstrate that extended phase space quantum trajectories not only recover S-matrix and quantum time quantities, but they also provide their own picture of resonant phenomena, as dynamically distinct events characterised by an integer number of closed orbits in the quantum phase space.

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states.

Gas hydrates are nanoporous crystalline solids composed of hydrogen-bonded water molecules forming cages within which gaseous molecules are encapsulated. Since their initial discovery, interest in gas hydrates has grown exponentially from being of mere scientific curiosity to offering a potential new energy solution to the imminent energy crisis [1]. Gas hydrates are considered to be pivotal terrestrial and extraterrestrial ingredients, as they make up a great part of the Earth's seafloor sediments and play a role in extraterrestrial planetary formation scenari [2]. For example, clathrate hydrates of methane are extensively studied in astrophysics because they are suspected to be present on several planets, satellites and comets of the Solar System [3]. However, the description of such encapsulated molecular systems is often far from complete. Indeed, in such nanoscale confinement, the translational center-of-mass motions of the caged molecules are quantized and strongly coupled to the molecular rotations, which are quantized too. To interpret experimental data (like inelastic neutron scattering), theoretical tools are useful but we need to go beyond the simple harmonic approximation as the guest molecule presents very large amplitude motions (translation and rotation) and its interaction with the nanoscale cavity can be far from harmonic. A rigorous quantum treatment of the intricate coupled translation-rotation and/or vibration-translation-rotation (considering the molecular hydrogen stretching mode) dynamics of the caged diatomic molecules is far from a routine task. In this contribution, I will present a review on our recent progress in the development of efficient/accurate computational methods for the rigorous quantum treatment of the intricate coupled translation-rotation dynamics of the molecular hydrogen in water clathrates [4-7]. In particular, the efficiency of the computational method will highlight the impact of the condensed-phase environment on the spectroscopy of the confined molecule. Moreover, the efficiency of our computational scheme allows us to directly probe the quality of the considered intermolecular potentials (ranging from semiempirical to the most sophisticated ab initio potentials). The nearby M dwarf WX UMa has recently been detected at radio wavelengths with LOFAR. The combination of its observed brightness temperature and circular polarisation fraction suggests that the emission is generated via the electron-cyclotron maser instability. Two distinct mechanisms have been proposed to power such emission from low-mass stars: either a sub-Alfv\'enic interaction between the stellar magnetic field and an orbiting planet, or reconnection at the edge of the stellar magnetosphere. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of both mechanisms, utilising the information about the star's surrounding plasma environment obtained from modelling its stellar wind. Using this information, we show that a Neptune-sized exoplanet with a magnetic field strength of 10-100 G orbiting at ~0.034 au can accurately reproduce the observed radio emission from the star, with corresponding orbital periods of 7.4 days. Due to the stellar inclination, a planet in an equatorial orbit is unlikely to transit the star. While such a planet could induce radial velocity semi-amplitudes from 7 to 396 m s$^{-1}$, it is unlikely that this signal could be detected with current techniques due to the activity of the host star. The application of our planet-induced radio emission model here illustrates its exciting potential as a new tool for identifying planet-hosting candidates from long-term radio monitoring. We also develop a model to investigate the reconnection-powered emission scenario. While this approach produces less favourable results than the planet-induced scenario, it nevertheless serves as a potential alternative emission mechanism which is worth exploring further.
